Monday Roller

"5am on a Monday morn.

Life's all good until the 'suits' come out."

Lyrically inspired after a Christchurch weekend gigging with The Skeptics at the Gladstone in the crazy 80's. Making it to Pete's Burger Bar on Victoria St before 10pm closing - always a good sign. The arvo head cookies were 8hrs on tho and still climbing and my eye did the over ordering. And that curbside ivy on Victoria St was damned inviting. Until 5am - 5am Monday morning is when the pinstripes started toe tapping brolly's curb side down Victoria St to the Otautahi 'caught' house.

By the late 80’s the Brazier's Blue lady descent that came after the Hooker pipe shop Budha stick Mr Asia Heroin dump had turned into the home baked Misty punk dole days that started at the Star & Garter and finished outside the Gladstone.

All make sense NOW - The dole day Timaru Thursday Skinheads were low IQ and useless without a pack. Any left behind would be brawling, on rivvies or vomiting down Durham St around 5am Friday - just as the new shift of Blue Shadow's hit their Friday beat. EZ meat for a truncheon. The suits were needed by the cops for the court house ritual first thing Monday. Arses wiped with pieces of justice by 8am and in Paparoa's C block by Noon Monday. And if they were lucky they'd be back out on the streets to do it all again 2 weeks later. A Mant inspired session produced by Harry Bretherton and featuring drunken swagger Bone from Scotty Taitoko.

Mighty Asterix "Pigbaggin-it" in Monaco Whakatu iPhone "selfie" footage is the result of a missed flight after our Salmonella Dub Soundsystem's March Soiree at Old MacDonald's Farm Marahau.

A Pigbag is by definition a rip - or perhaps something that’s worth less than what you paid. Lyrics - "Inspirations of crime are forgiven in time" -  was thinking about the culture of rips dating back the money lenders in the temple - "statues of stone" - an  "ice age of giving" - 3rd person  victim perspective - "I hear you know"  Dave's first person empathy response - call - OUR PIG BAGGING IT is a RIP of UK punk ska band Pigbag’s "Papa's Got a Brand New Pig Bag" a rip of James Brown’s "Papa's got a brand new bag". They RIPPED the horn and bass line from James Brown and called it PAPPA"S GOT A BRAND NEW PIGBAG

World She Waits

World She Waits - started as an outtake from the One Drop East Session in Otautahi 2003. Crittah

ft. The Mighty Asterix

Crittah Messiah

- produced by David Harrow.

Lyrics penned in a 4am Gizi toilet sesh with a Rudeboy and a tired Mighty Ass Trix - a 5 show Sal Dub Soundsystem run - Queens Bday weekend 2019 - got the iphone footage - and another story - same tune tune different title - Afro Duckshead -

No Autopsy

ft. Whirimako Black

“No Autopsy No Formaldehyde - Bury this body in its Kōwhai.”

Epitaph and gat textures from Andrew. Original lyric - “No more spliff we smoke hardcore cannabis” was vetoed after the NZ Cannabis referendum to legalise cannabis backfired - Why we weren’t voting to decriminalise is an obvious nod to the business roundtable. Extra vocals from our beautiful e hoa Whirimako Black. Dave Deaks on the kit with drum programming and production from Haza Bretherton. Mant Tyler on keyboard bass.

Same Time

ft. Laughton Kora & Whirimako Black

Written by Dave D & Antsmif in Byron Bay & Sydney. Additional vocals from Whirimako Black recorded in Wakatū Nelson & Laughton Kora in the Salmonella Dub Creative Retreat Kaikoura.

Word from Dave D “The chorus lyric came as a frustration of the seeming sameness of life without fulfilment or deviation which became very palpable and salient during lockdown. What kicked the track into gear during recording was the inspiring addition of the mind shattering psychotropic gat solo J Mascis meets Neil young.”

Soul Love Trippa Vinyl Artwork Themes Backstory

"Hear what the good music of Aotearoa has to say"

There is no arrogance intended with this lyric. The Good Aotearoa Music is a reference to the wondrous and historic orchestra of native bird song in Aotearoa 500 years ago. We have a motif rolling through our artwork to represent this emphasizing the now missing members with skeletons.

The packshot art for Soul Love Trippa uses the kowhai art from our old 2 cent coins with original lettering from the bands eye motif originator and seminal poster designer Liz Penman.

The kowhai theme in the packshot is a motif from Salmonella Dub’s forthcoming album Return to our Kowhai arranged in Salmonella Dub’s Hapuku Creative Retreat in Kaikoura.

The band's Kaikoura studio is surrounded by one of the oldest stands of Kowhai regrowth on the east coast, with some kowhai estimated to be over 250 years old.

In the album title track Return to our Kowhai - a new jungle. Andrew recites a spoken word piece about the importance of the whakapapa of our environment adapted from a speech Albert Hoffman delivered at a conference celebrating his 100th birthday.

“Some will come to look for gold. Lost their hearts before they’re old. Those who know to keep it strong will live elsewhere to see the dawn”
