Words from Andrew

“ We used to listen to Beat Rhythm Fashion on RDU in the 4th form. Damned auspicious that Nino is now joining us Live on stage - especially as it’s at same time since that Pete has returned at the time I have finally finished the album for Whiri which by accident also includes a track with Nino. The 3 releases that come with this show are closure on a recording process that started with Pete the week before the last Kaikoura Roots Fest back in 2012.

In 2017 we gave Nino 3 of those tracks to write on after the WHO SNUBBED WHO ? Stuff Dub Snub NZ music awards story went viral. It was the least we could do to uphold the Beat Rhythm Fashion mana.

The thing is I never turned that Legacy award - I’d let Recorded NZ Music know that mum said I should accept it graciously and that I would. That involved a fair amount of mahi including getting leave from our day jobs, preparing an historic show reel, selecting and prepping a band who had been influential. It was 6 weeks before the awards when I was told that Beat Rhythm Fashion weren’t unworthy to perform a Sal Dub trax. When I pushed for the reason why? - I was told the show producers deemed them unsuitable for the demographic” So I had to ask - aren’t you the music award show producers?

There was real irony in the answer to that question. In the red carpet dayz of 2017 NZ Recorded Music weren’t the Music Awards show producers for the Vodafone NZ Music Awards in the Spark Arena - they’d sold that right to the failing media company who owned TV3.

I never turned down that award. In fact I was never told we weren't going to receive it. When I was told Beat Rhythm Fashion could represent coz the show no longer belonged to musicians I simply said I was no longer able to attend. I never heard back from them after that. The thing is I am only one of about 20 peps involved in Sal Dubs half finished legacy.

Have to confess things got a bit toey earlier in the process when I was told the music awards peps weren’t used to dealing direct with the artist they usually worked with the manager. My response to that was honest - and no cause for alarm.

Down here in the mainland we tell any kiwi bands who can’t manage themselves to fuck off back home and live with mum.

It was all a bit of a yawn by the time Stuff were making threats if I didn’t give them a statement. Held them off for 3 weeks before giving them the Dub Snub quote.

"Salmonella Dub are a young band not yet deserving of a legacy award. We feel it would be more fitting to be invited into the NZ music industry's award ceremony in 2043 when we celebrate our 50th birthday. In the meanwhile our plan over the next 25 years is to further foster and assist the artistic development of our collective Aotearoa musical voice."
